Graphing results in Excel is an excellent way to visualize data, and the Radar chart provides a good means of viewing your organization. Most organizations are not perfectly balanced; it seems inherent in many companies that some groups contribute more than others. At GM, engineering and manufacturing might be considered higher contributors than procurement. At Microsoft, engineering (software development) is probably viewed to contribute more than manufacturing. When consulting with the senior management team of our customers, we are sometimes asked to evaluate the capabilities of the company, or specific departments. As an impartial, outside observer, we are able to comply with this request. If you were the CEO, your organizational structure might be comprised of: manufacturing, engineering, marketing, sales, finance and procurement. Whatever your management role is, you could substitute your organizations structure in place of the ones mentioned. Enter the radar chart. This Summary Table and Organizational Balance chart, show the results of our Organizational Questionnaire. The Before column are the questionnaire results when customers (or Corbitt Associates) rank each department according to their contribution to the company. The After section of the questionnaire, asks what the maximum rank of each group could be. We use that to normalize the Before data, and determine what improvement, if any, is possible. The Before, and After results in this example illustrate that Finance, has the largest percentage improvement to be made, but would still only rank 45. Manufacturing, by comparison has little improvement to be made, but could still rise to 94. Your implementation of the radar chart could be less complex, and still yield meaningful results in better understanding your Organizational Balance.
