Dear Executive,
* Email: Is It SPAM?  How to avoid receiving SPAM, or having your emails flagged as SPAM *

You probably know that you shouldn't open an email from someone you don't know and be extra cautious if there is an attachment.  But, sometimes I get an email with a From and Subject like the example shown below, which makes it difficult to determine if it might be legitimate, or SPAM:

From: Joe
Subject: the project we discussed

Well, I know several people named Joe and I'm always discussing some project, so it might be legitimate.  Here's what I do.

Every email client has a Save As option, and I use that with the email in question, and Save As to a temporary directory I have for junk.  If your email client doesn't add a file extension of txt automatically, you will want to type that at the end of the filename.  Now when you open the email in text format you can view the contents without worrying about any HTML, or Javascript commands being launched.  You'll see the HTML code, but with a little effort it's easy to read the content of the message and see who sent it.

Here are a few DO and DON'T suggestions when sending email
DO use your first and last name
DO consider adding your company name: first name last name [My Company]
DO try to make the subject as specific as possible, avoid generic subjects
DON'T type your subject in all capital letters
DON'T include attachments, if you can send a URL link instead
DON'T try to include more than 50 contacts as cc or bcc (your ISP may consider such email as SPAM)

This isn't an all inclusive list of DO and DON'T items, but may allow your emails to reach their intended destination, instead of being flagged as SPAM.  And, help you avoid opening a potential SPAM email.
