* Review: Comcast VideoMail and Google Earth *

These are two programs that I think you can find useful for business, or pleasure.  There is no charge for either program.  You can learn more about each one, and download them from the links shown below.

Comcast VideoMail (http://www.comcast.net/videomail/)
With a broadband connection this is a nice way to easily create, and send video clips via email from your webcam.  You actually don't send the video file, which makes it easier for the person receiving the email.  The email contains a hyperlink to the file residing on the Comcast server, and is streamed to the user when selected.  The quality is good, it is easy to use, and you can make a videomail up to three minutes in length.  You can even add still pictures and narrate them while they display.  Try the on-line demo to see for yourself.  If you travel a lot, it's a nice way to surprise the family and stay in touch.

Google Earth (http://earth.google.com/)
If you ever read a Tom Clancy novel, and wondered what it was like for Jack Ryan to watch live video from a satellite of a military strike on the ground - this is probably as close as you'll get.  Unless you work for the NSA, NRO, NGA...  We used the product before Google acquired it, formerly known as keyhole.com.  Keyhole provided web-based software that allowed people to view satellite images from around the globe.  Keyhole took its name from Keyhole-class (KH) reconnaissance satellites.  These satellites have an imaging resolution which allows them to resolve objects of 5"-6" on the ground.  The Google Earth pictures are taken from satellite and aircraft over the last three years.

Here are a couple of things you can do, but the last bullet is the one you are going to want to try! Type in your address, and watch as the camera zooms from space, closer, and closer to your home. It's really pretty amazing.
  • Search for schools, parks, restaurants, and hotels. Get driving directions.
  • Tilt and rotate the view to see 3D terrain and buildings.
  • Fly from space to your neighborhood. Type in an address and zoom right in.

We've been early adopters of Google products, and I think this one shows the way for future mapping products - 3D control, GPS interface, user overlays, search, and Keyhole Markup Language (KML).
