We discussed how to add these characters from Word, PowerPoint, or Excel in an earlier TechTIP (10 AUG 05), but you can access those same characters without having to open those programs. This is handy when you need to add special characters, in other applications. As an example we use Eudora as our email client. It does not provide special characters, but does support cut and paste.
First you can determine if the Character Map is already installed on your computer, by searching for the file charmap.exe. If so, you can create a shortcut from it to your desktop. If it is not installed, you can install it from the Control Panel. The general steps for a WinXP computer are, go to Add or Remove Programs and in the Office XP Setup window, select Add or Remove Features, select Add and under Office Tools, select Character Map.
Now you can add special characters, in other applications that do not offer that feature.
